Pope Innocent X, in 1644 – 1655 the 236th before Alexander VII

We have here in this page, the story of the 236th Pope in the Catholic Church leaders calendar. He is Pope Innocent X, and he reign in 1644 with his successor as Pope Alexander VII.

After Pope Evan VIII, Pope Innocent X tooke charge as the ruler of the Catholic Church and held the papal throne for more than a decade and as it’s 236th leaders since Saint Pope Peter and Saint Pope Linus.

Pope Innocent X was born in May 5, 1574 in Rome with his birth name as Giovanni Batista PamphilJ and had a familial connection to Pope Alexander VI who many historians regarded as his great grand father.

His family came from Gubbio and he spent his early life in Rome and he gained strong following and reputation as many of the members of his family served the Catholic Church and at an early age, he studied at Roman College and after graduation, hold his first position as a Lawyer.

He also served as Canonist after tooling his uncle’s role as an auditor. Soon joined it’s ranks in the Catholic Church after Pope Gregory XV saw his work, named him a diplomat and sent him to the Kingdom of Naples.

History says that, Pope Innocent X was also close to King Philip IV of Spain which many says lead to his papacy.

His papal election was done shortly after the death of Pope Urban VIII and Giovanni was a cardinal at the time but only attended the papal conclave and did not intend to put his name forth.

It was at the conclave that a group of the former pope’s nephews disagreed with the leading choice of the election by the Spanish pope, believing that Innocent of French was a better choice and they had much support, so Giovanni was selected.

So, on September 15 1644, he started as ruler of the church, taking the name of Innocent X, and became the 10th Pope to use the name Innocent.

What he fits did as papacy was issue a papal bull that allowed him to take the property owner by the French supporters who attempted to take the throne.

He then eliminated the benefits that the French supporters earned from working for the Church along with his relations restoration with France after one of the men married the his niece.

Pope Innocent is remembered by many things in his 10 years reign like his help in creating a large fountain in the city and his issuance of a bull against Jansenism which was a sect of the Church led by Cornelius Jansen focused heavily on predestination and original sin.

You should know that Pope Innocent X is one of the Pope’s of the church and he was were related to past popes like the story that Pope Alexander VI was his great-great-great-grandfather.

On January 7, 1655, Pope Innocent X died of Natural causes making his Papacy to end on same day January 7, 1655 after 10 years. He was 80 years at the time of his death and had his Successor, Pope Alexander VII take over as leader of the church.
