The Short History and Achievement of Wilt Chamberlain, African American Basketball Player

Wilt Chamberlain was a professional American Basketball Player that was born on August 12th 1936 in Pennsylvania United States of America and for Hight school, he attended Overbrook, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

After High School, we went to college at Kansas and graduated in 1958 and in 1959, he joined the NBA drafts having being selected by Philadelphia Warriors but before that, you should note that Chamberlain, played for the Harlem Globetrotters before joining the NBA where he was signed for 50,000 dollars. He was unable to join NBA due to the rule at the time that one must finish college and when he’d joined, he became the highest paid player. He was paid 30,000 dollars beating a former highest paid, 25,000 dollars. He also in 1973, was paid a salary of 600,000 dollars by San Diego Conquistadors of the NBA rival league ABA to work as a player-coach.

It was long known that Chamberlain will be great in basketball, starting from high school and when he finished leading over two hundred universities fighting to recruit Chamberlain and some offered Diamonds and job position for his Coach if he’d persuade him but finally he joined the University of Kansas where he played and led the Kansas Jayhawks to the national championship game but the teamd didn’t win the game.

Wilt Chamberlain is known as a legend in basketball having gone to Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and also College Basketball Hall of Fame that was indicted in 2006. He has 72 NBA records which made a former teammate, Billy Cunningham state;

“The NBA Guide reads like Wilt’s personal diary.”

He broke record when he score 100 points in a single NBA game and had only one loose when he join the losing team at 14 years in the game of  San Francisco Warriors in 1962 and 63 that went 31-49. He is known to have achieved a lot at the time no one can like having gotten 50 average point in a season and a player that has never fouled out of a game and also he has many times, the only player in NBA history to average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds per game in a season.

So, on October 24, 1959, Chamberlain made his NBA debut, he was listed as 7 ft tall and weigh 258 pounds and played at the center position, first playing for Philadelphia Warriors. Chamberlain played 14 years for the National Basketball Association (NBA) earning titles and awards for himself.

He is known as one of the greatest Basketball Player, being compared with Micheal Jordan and holds numerous NBA regular season records in scoring, rebounding, and durability.

Talking more on the achievement of Chamberlain, he is enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978, and elected to the NBA’s 35th, 50th, and 75th anniversary teams and he holds numerous official NBA all-time records and also brought various changes and new rule to the game of basketball.

Wilt Chamberlain also played Volleyball for a while when he stop his career in basketball, playing for International Volleyball Association (IVA) where he was also enshrined in IVA Hall of Fame for his contributions.

In 1984, Chamberlain appeared as the antagonist in the 1984 Arnold Schwarzenegger film Conan the Destroyer and died at the age of 63 year.

Wilt Chamberlain was 63 years old when he died from Congestive Heart Failure having a history of cardiovascular disease, and was briefly hospitalized in 1992 for an irregular heartbeat, he took medications for his heart troubles but it became worst in 1999 and he lost fifty pounds (23 kg).

Before his death on 12th October 1999, he undergo dental surgery where he was in a lot of pain and seemed unable to recover from the stress and eventually he died at his home in Bel Air.

Let’s not also not forget on the Basketball legend who inscribed that he had slept with 20,000 women. Rip Legend.
